Air Traffic Control

Air Traffic Control Department of Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics provides education at the undergraduate level training air traffic controller candidates in line with national and international standards. The teaching process largely consists of basic infrastructure courses required for air traffic controller, theoretical courses and application of these theoretical courses in air traffic control simulators. The program aims to teach students the basics of aviation, air traffic control methods using today's technologies and to gain research and problem solving skills by working in teams experimentally and theoretically in the program. The training provided is also aimed at creating the necessary scientific infrastructure for solving traffic system problems such as air traffic delays, capacity problems, aircraft trajectory prediction-collision avoidance.

Due to the fact that the international language used in aviation is English, Air Traffic Controller candidates are required to know English at a level determined by International Civil Aviation Organization and the General Directorate of Civil Aviation in our country as Level 4. Therefore, students can continue optional English Preparatory Class within our University for one year before starting the department.

Air Traffic Control department has radar and aerodrome control simulator equipped with voice recognition technology with both training and research and development opportunities with today's technology which also provides self-education opportunity. Radar simulator has 12 working positions. In the aerodrome control simulator 360degree view opportunity is supplied with 10 ceiling projectors. Six major airports of our country and one generic airport installed and ready for simulation in our aerodrome control simulator.

An important part of the courses are held one-on-one in the aerodrome control and radar control simulators of the department under the program. Students should take “Air Traffic Applications I” and “Air Traffic Applications II” courses in the last year and to complete the projects they will prepare here and to present first as a poster and then orally before the jury in order to graduate.

Students completing theoretical and practical courses in the training plan approved by Turkish DGCA perform their compulsory internships at the air traffic control units within General Directorate of State Airports Authority according to SHT-ATCO/TRAINING instruction. Students also reinforce theoretical knowledge gained through unit internships and their experience in the simulation environment actively with their real-life internships in air traffic control units.

Most of the courses are held one-on-one so that each instructor has two students in the aerodrome control and radar control simulators of the department under the program. Students should take “Development Practices for Air Traffic Management” and “Simulation of Air Traffic Control and Operations” courses in the last year and to complete the projects they will prepare here and to present first as a poster and then before the jury in order to graduate.

ESTU Air Traffic Control Department is the only undergraduate program authorized by Civil Aviation General Directorate according to SHT-ATCO/TRAINING instruction with an "Air Traffic Control Training Organization Certificate" among state universities in Turkey. Under this authorization graduates who have completed undergraduate education qualify for Air Traffic Controller License exam according to “SHY-65-01 01 Air Traffic Control Services Personnel License and Rating Regulation”.
